This non-destructive method testing is especially interesting for its capacity for being applied on complex parts. PCRT uses the resonant frequencies of a material to detect defects, similar to the Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy (RUS). However, PCRT doesn’t determine acceptability by classical resonant analysis, but it relies in algorithms that allow an immediate pattern recognition and an automated pass-fail test without the need of any additional interpretation tool. It is clear that the computer software is key in the accuracy of this technique, and another influential factor is temperature. For this reason, there are many researches and patents on algorithms. On the other hand, two different models can be implemented. The Forward Model predicts the resonance frequencies and mode shapes of the part, while the Model Inversion allows the quantitative evaluation of the macro-scale test sample and the micro-structure material state. In this last model, the Part-To-Itself approach alleviates problems related to the confounding by multiple parameters having similar effects on a part’s resonance frequencies. This is done by analyzing the changes in the resonance frequencies between states, rather than the absolute frequencies themselves. Nevertheless, this method requires a model ‘calibration’ process, which can be done by comparing to a ‘reference’ part and subsequently inverting material property changes. PCRT presents others drawbacks, as it cannot detect really small flaws, and neither the locations or the sizes of the defects in the piece. However, it has many advantages besides being a non-destructive technique. It can be used in most materials, sizes and geometries. It is quick, easy and inexpensive compared to others NDT methods. It also reduces waste and it detects a wide number of types of defects. To sum up, PCRT has future in many applications, but it may be required another technique after its test to further analyse the present defects on a part. Furthermore, it is interesting to notice that the PCRT inspections are already used in commercial aerospace applications on complex geometries in order to improve components reliability while reducing inspection and part replacement costs. It may represent the future of AM component inspection. The current suite of inspections is not providing the individual part validation that is needed and the industry is currently relying on an assumed representative tensile sample to confirm material conformance of batches of parts. The PCRT method meets both of these needs, providing a production-ready, 100% inspection option that quantifies inspection results, supporting process monitoring, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.
