During fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, magic had a great influence on the life of individuals and especially on their religious beliefs as religion served economic and political ideologies until the eighteenth century. This book explores the similarities and differences between the character of Dr. Faustus, the protagonist, and Dr. Stockmann, the main character of Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People. It also considers the factors surrounding them that change the ideologies of the two characters in terms of social, religious, and political aspects and attitudes toward society. This book reflects the nature of the English society as well as the Norwegian society, in one way or another, as one of the most important factors shaping and impacting the two characters. Firstly, through Faustus, false religiosity, witchcraft, and the denial of the greatness of God are revealed, and through Stockmann, mock-up democracy, the ignorance of society, and the real motives that made Stockmann the enemy of the people are divulged.
This inquiry is centered across Marxism and its fundamental principles as it attempts to provide a Marxist comparative study of the two doctor characters in terms of various aspects. It also explores the basics of Marxism and its historical background. Moreover, through the two plays, this investigation illustrates the relationship between literature and Marxism. The second chapter scrutinizes the main factors that overshadowed the two characters as a whole. Indeed, Marlowe and Ibsen genuinely portray the English and Norwegian societies via these two literary works. Finally, the third chapter explores the dimensions that define the nature of both Faustus and Stockmann and the reasons that led to the tragic fate of the two characters.
