يعتبر 'مايكل كارتر' (Michael George Carter) من أبرز المستشرقين الذين اهتموا بالدراسات النحوية العربية، وقد أولى عناية خاصّة بكتاب 'سيبويه'، تعكس أعماله المنشورة اهتمامه بالنظرية النحوية العربية. ارتبط اسمه بالقضية الجدلية المرتبطة بإمكانية تأثر النحو العربي بالثقافات الأخرى كالمنطق اليوناني أو النحو السرياني أو حتى الهندي، صاغ فرضية تؤكد خلو النحو العربي في نشأته من أي تأثير أجنبي، وكان نقده منصبًّا على أصحاب 'فرضية الاقتراض' القائلين إن النحو اليوناني هو الأنموذج المتّبع من لدُنِ النحاة العرب الأوائل في بناء نظريتهم النحوية. استدلّ 'كارتر' في موقفه المدافع عن أصالة النحو العربي بالمصطلحات التي استخدمها 'سيبويه' في الكتاب، إذ قسّمها إلى مجموعتين الأولى مصطلحات عربية الأصل وهي الأغلب، والثانية وهي قليلة تتوافق مع المصطلحات اليونانية، مُبرزًا الفرق بين القياس الأرسطي الذي يبدأ من الكليات إلى الجزئيات وبين القياس اللغوي النحوي العربي المتوافق مع القياس الفقهي، ومُؤَكِّدًا على العلاقة القوية بين النحو والفقه.
أهمّيّة البحث: تكمن أهمية هذا البحث في إبراز فكر 'كارتر' وأسلوبه الذي نهجه لإثبات أوليّة وأصالة الفكر النحوي عند العرب عامة، وفي كتاب سيبويه خاصة عبر تحليل أفكاره وتوظيف مضامينه لدحض الادعاءات التي وجهت للفكر النحوي من جهة، كما لجأ المستعرب الأسترالي إلى المقارنة التاريخية بالعودة إلى النصوص الأصلية لمعرفة السابق من اللاحق من جهة ثانية، والمقارنة بين المصطلحات النحوية والفقهية التي تشير بصورة واضحة إلى العلاقة الوثيقة بين هذين العلمين واعتماد النحو على مصطلحات الفقه في تحليل الظاهرة النحوية من جهة ثالثة، والبرهنة على تداخل العلوم لدى أغلب النحويين في ذلك الوقت بين علوم الفقه والقراءات وعلم الكلام وغيرها من التخصصات الشرعية الإسلامية من جهة أخرى.

Michael George Carter is considered one of the most prominent Orientalists who focused on Arabic grammatical studies. He paid particular attention to Sibawayh's Kitab (Book), and his published works reflect his deep interest in Arabic grammatical theory. His name is closely associated with the contentious issue of whether Arabic grammar was influenced by other cultures, such as Greek logic, Syriac grammar, or even Indian grammar. Carter formulated a hypothesis asserting that Arabic grammar, in its origins, was free from any foreign influence. His critique was directed at proponents of the "borrowing hypothesis," who argue that Greek grammar served as the model followed by early Arab grammarians in constructing their grammatical theory.
Carter defended the originality of Arabic grammar by analyzing the terminology used by Sibawayh in his Kitab. He divided these terms into two groups: the first, which constitutes the majority, are of Arabic origin, and the second, which are few in number, align with Greek terminology. He highlighted the distinction between Aristotelian syllogism, which moves from universals to particulars, and Arabic linguistic-grammatical syllogism, which aligns with jurisprudential reasoning. Carter emphasized the strong connection between grammar (nahw) and jurisprudence (fiqh).
Significance of the Research:

Furthermore, he demonstrated the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge among most grammarians of that time, who were versed in fields such as jurisprudence, Quranic readings, theology, and other Islamic scholarly disciplines.
