الملخص الانجليزي
Mangroves ecosystems are one of the most productive ecosystems on earth. They provide a wide-range of ecological services such as the provision of essential habitat, breeding grounds, reproduction locations and nutrients for birds, fish, crustaceans, shellfish, reptiles, mammals as well as various commercial species. They protect shorelines from coastal erosion, floods, hurricanes, tsunamis, and storm surges; and accumulate sediment, contaminants, carbon and nutrients. Mangrove provide a menu of socioeconomic benefits such as timber, tourism and fishing. Assessing the economic value of the ecosystem services is ever more became essential for environmental decision-making. The availability of economic values for mangrove ecosystems is vital to inform environmental decision making processes especially during evaluating utilization opportunities related to natural resources as well as supporting cost benefit analysis process. This article addresses the economic value of mangroves ecosystem services around the globe and reviews the methods and techniques for mangrove economic valuation. There is a wide range of estimates and approaches for mangrove economic values (i.e. per hectare or per household). Not all valuation studies include the total economic value (TEV) of the resource services where different methods are followed in valuation. Factors such as; characteristics of the site, time frame, valuation budget, and research quality all contribute to the study results and therefore impact the monetary value. There are some attempts for calculating the global value of mangrove. Studies suggest that the TEV of world’s mangrove habitat is around US$181billion (US$10,000 ha−1) where other studies estimate it as high as between US$475 and US$1675 ha−1. This study concludes that mangroves are undervalued in most valuation studies.
