تشكل الرحلات أهمية تاريخية, وجغرافية, للباحثين فهي من أوثق المصادر, الوصفية التي دونت عن طريق المشاهدة العينية, مما تفتقر إليه المصادر الأخرى, كما حرص أغلب الرحالة على التفريق بين المشاهدة والرواية عند تسجيل معلوماتهم, فقد كان من بين الرحالة رجال علم, ودين, قامت رحلتهم على أساس التزود بالعلم والالتقاء بالعلماء, وقد تعددت أهداف ودوافع الرحلات عند المسلمين منذ تكوين الدولة الإسلامية, ما بين روحية ومادية, وإن ظل الحج إلى بيت الحرام بالأراضي الحجازية من الدوافع والأهداف الروحية, فهي من أعظم الرحلات التي يتشوق إليها كافة المسلمين, وكان منهم من يدونون عند عودتهم إلى بلادهم مشاهداتهم, وما مروا به من البلدان, لنفع المسلمين بتجاربهم, فيصفون رحلاتهم, للفت النظر إلى ما يجب إصلاحه من ولاة الأمر, فكانت هناك مراكز رئيسية في شتى البلاد الإسلامية للترحيب بإخوانهم المسلمين المتوجهين شطر المسجد الحرام, يعنون بهم وبراحتهم, ونتيجة لذلك كثرت الكتب والمؤلفات عن الحج ورحلته, وطرقه, وكان لليبيا نصيب من الذكر في هذه المؤلفات كالرحلة الناصرية ورحلة العياشي, ومحطاتها الرئيسية لتيسير قوافل الحج المغاربية.
