- Abstract This study was designed to evaluate the effect of feed restriction and feed form on growth performance, carcass characteristics, blood metabolites and right ventricle to total of heart weight ratio in broiler chickens from 1 to 42 d of age. A total of 576 Ross-308 male broilers were arranged factorially at 8 treatments, each replicated 6 times. Experimental treatments included: two feed form (pellet and mash), and 4 levels of feed restriction (ad libitum, 95, 90 and 85% of ad libitum intake level). Restriction program started at day 8 and ended at day 34, and compensatory program started at day 35 to the end of experiment. Results of the present study showed that feed form didn’t have any significant effect on weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio from d 1 to 42 of age (P˃0.05). Pellet feeding increased mortality rate and weight of heart and right ventricle to ventricle weight ratio (P≤0.05), while feed restriction decreased rate of mortality (P≤0.05). Birds that received feed restriction program had a lower body weight on d 21, compared with ad libitum fed birds (P≤0.05), but they were able to reach the appropriate market weight at the end of experiment on d 42 and there were no significant difference between fed restricted birds and those fed ad libitum on d 42 of experiment. Pellet form increased relatively weight of carcass, breast, heart, thigh and proventriculus, whereas gizzard weight decreased at 21 and 42 of age (P≤0.05). Overall, applying feed restriction regimens at pellet feeding during 8 to 35 d of age, may beneficial to control mortality rate and ascites syndrome, in addition, feed efficiency and weigh gain compensated during last week of rearing that free access to feed recommended.
