تتركز الفكرة الأساسية التي يعالجها البحث حول إبجاد حد أدني للاتفاق بين المشتغلين بالتفسير وعلوم القرآن لمصطحات متداولة بينهم بكثرة؛ وهي ألفاظ: المحكم والمتشابه والمؤول، ومناقشة تعريفاتهم لهذه المصطلحات ومحاولة الخروج بقاسم مشترك يجمع ويوفق بين اختلافهم في بيان وتوضيح معاني هذه المصطلحات، عملًا بقاعدة الجمع بين الأدلة والتوفيق بينها أولى من ترجيح أحدها على الآخر.
هذا ولما كانت سلامة الوصول إلى نتائج إيجابية تقتضيه؛ فقد اعتمد البحث المنهج الاستقرائي التحليلي في تناول العلاقة الرابطة بين مصطلحات الدراسة موضوع البحث.
وبتوفيق الله سبحانه وتعالى فقد توصل البحث إلى عدد من النتائج كان أهمها:
• المحكم له إطلاقان: أحدهما في مقابل المنسوخ، والآخر في مقابل المتشابه، كما أن المتشابه نوعان: حقيقي لا يعلم حقيقته إلا الله تعالى، وإضافي نسبي يشتبه على بعض الناس، ولا يعلمه إلا الراسخون في العلم.
• فرّق العلماء بين مسألة (اشتمال القرآن على ما لا معنى له)، ومسألة (اشتمال القرآن على ما لا يفهم معناه)، ومما قرّروه أنه لا خلاف في عدم وقوع المسألة الأولى على الصحيح، والخلاف المذكور إنما هو واقع في المسألة الأخرى، والجمهور على جواز وقوع ذلك.
• بين التفسير والتأويل عموم وخصوص، فكل تفسير تأويل لا العكس، وذلك أنّ للتأويل عدّة إطلاقات اصطلاحية، وهو في أحدها بمعنى التفسير.
