لقد أخرج نجيب محفوظ الرواية العربية من عزلتها، بعد أن خاطب المتلقي من أجل إعادة بناء الوعي العربي، وبعد أن خاض في تحليل الواقع العربي بإمكانات فنية عالية الجودة، رغبة في خلق نوع من التحديث بعد مراجعة " الذات" في متواليات هزائمها، لذلك جاءت رواياته نقدا للذات، بدافع نشر الوعي الثقافي، وكأننا به يقر بهزيمة الوعي العربي "مؤسساتيا" وليس ذهنيا، أو بما يجهل.
كما يجد القارئ في صفحات هذا الكتاب تنوعا في إجراءات المنهج، وتعددا في طرائق التحليل والنقد، غير أن العامل المشترك بين هذه الدراسة وتلك ماثلٌ في الرضا التام على ثراء نجيب محفوظ المعرفي، وفي العطاء السردي المتميز، وفي النفاذ إلى صميم الفكر الواقعي الذي مارسه مع شخوصه، رغبة في توصيل الفكرة في مرامِها، والوقوف على جوهر الحقيقة الضائعة في واقعنا العربي.

Naguib Mahfouz took out the Arab novel from its isolation, after addressing the recipient to rebuild Arab consciousness. After analyzing the Arab reality with high-quality artistic possibilities, he sought to create a kind of modernization after reviewing the "self" in the sequences of his defeats. A critique of self, motivated by the dissemination of cultural awareness, as if it recognizes the defeat of the Arab consciousness "institutional" and not mentally, or what is not known.
The reader also finds in the pages of this book a variety of methodological procedures, and a multiplicity in the methods of analysis and criticism, but the common factor between this study and that is the complete satisfaction with the richness of Naguib Mahfouz knowledge, and in the presentation of the narrative, In order to connect the idea to its goal, and to find out the essence of the lost truth in our Arab reality.
