يعتبر ابن خلدون [ 732هـ/ 1332م ـ 808 هـ /1406م] واحدا من ألمع مفكري هذه الحقبة ؛ إذ بلغت نظريته الاجتماعية مبلغا لم يسبق لها مثيل في موروثنا المعرفي ، فعُدَّت بذلك هذه النظرية مشربا وينبوعا من " القَرَاح المعرفي " في الفكر التاريخي الاجتماعي الذي لم يسبق إليها أحد غيره بحسب قوله : " واعلم أن الكلام في هذا الغرض مستحدث الصنعة ، غريب النزعة ، غزير الفائدة أعثر عليه البحث وأدى إليه الغوص " .
لم يعد من الضروري أن نناقش ما توصل إليه العلماء والباحثون من أسباب أدت إلى نجاح ابن خلدون في اكتشافاته العلمية / الاجتماعية ، بوصفها إضافات أساسية في الدراسات المعاصرة ؛ لأن ذلك من الحيرة ما يدعو الباحث ـ مثلي ـ أيهما يختار فيما يأخذ منها ، وما يترك ، نظرا لسعتها ، وما تناولته في حق تألق هذا العلامة الأروع ، وكأنه يعاصرنا بنظراته الزّكِنة في فراستها وحدسها ، وعندما يحاول المرء أن يتناول مثل هذه الشخصية الفذة عليه أن يكون له نَفَس "الغواص على اللآلئ في قعر اليم ، كلما وقع على لؤلؤة ترى له بجانيها ما هو أسنى منها ، وأبعث على الإعجاب " . وكذا شأن كل من يحاول الإبحار في " كتاب العبر، وديوان المبتدأ والخبر، في أيام العرب والعجم والبربر، ومن عاصرهم من ذوي السلطان الأكبر. "
