وتحظى المخطوطات باهتمام العديد من الدارسين والباحثين وذلك لقيمتها العلمية والفنية وان الحفاظ عليها يعني الحفاظ على الهوية القومية خصوصاً مع ظهور التقنية أصبح لزاماً الحفاظ على المخطوطات من التلف والضياع وإتاحتها لأكبر عدد من المستفيدين. وكان العرب قديماً من اهم الشعوب التي ساهمت في الحفاظ على المخطوطات.

إحدى أهم التحديات التي تواجه المجتمع الحديث هي إدارة وحفظ واسترجاع المعلومات من الكم الهائل من الوثائق والملفات الورقية والتي تتزايد بشكل يومي وباستخدام التقنية فان مدة البحث عن الوثيقة المطلوبة أو توزيع الوثائق للجهات المطلوبة فان ذلك يؤدي إلى زيادة إنتاجية المؤسسة بشكل كبير .
