تمثل ظاهرة الانتحار احد ابرز التحديات التي تواجه المجتمعات الانسانية في الوقت الحاضر، وتزداد بشكل متواصل حالات الانتحار في مختلف دول العالم وتتعدد الاسباب والدوافع التي تقف وراء حالات الانتحار، ورغم ان ظاهرة الانتحار تشكل تحدي جديد لعمل المنظمات الدولية الحكومية وغير الحكومية، وان هذه المنظمات عليها ان تدرج ضمن اهتماماتها هذا الموضوع وان تتدخل من اجل ايجاد اليات مناسبة للعمل يساعدها في ذلك الدول الاعضاء فيها والتي هي الاخرى مطالبة بان توفر المزيد من الاهتمام وترصد المزيد الاموال لتحجيم هذه الظاهرة والحيلولة دون تفاقمها، مع مراعاة ان هذا الملف يختلف عن غيره من الملفات الانسانية التي تعاملت معها الدول والمنظمات الدولية كونه اكثر تعقيداً ويتسم بالغموض ووجود تحديات ذات طابع نوعي وكمي تؤثر في سير العمل لتلك الاطراف.
وليس للانتحار حدود ، فهو قد يحدث للكثير من الناس على اختلاف اعمارهم ودخولهم المالية، ومن مختلف الاعراق والاديان، ومن مختلف دول العالم، وقد تكون العواقب العاطفية والنفسية للانتحار طويلة الامد وقد تتسبب في خسائر فادحة لأسر وذوي معارف المنتحر. وان من يعتقد بان الانتحار ظاهرة نادرة الحدوث فان هذا الاعتقاد ليس بالصحيح، حيث يموت حوالي (800000) شخص بالانتحار على مستوى العالم كل عام، مما يعني وفاة شخص خلال كل 40 ثانية، والانتحار وبحسب الاحصائيات الدولية هو السبب الثاني للوفاة بين الاشخاص الذين تتراوح اعمارهم ما بين 16 الى 29 عام وان الاشخاص الذين تتولد لديهم الرغبة في الانتحار تكون عندهم هذه الرغبة لفترة زمنية محدودة فقط، ويمكن لهم تخطي هذه المرحلة، وعندما لا تؤدي محاولة الانتحار الى الوفاة يبقى هناك خطر لتكرار المحاولة، ويعتبر هؤلاء الاشخاص الاكثر عرضة للمحاولات المستقبلية
