الملخص الانجليزي
Abstract Graffiti and street art are forms of contemporary visual culture that are rising remarkably with the recent waves of political uprisings and turn to be expressive relevant murals on cities walls. They represent visual language that implies meaningful messages as a persuasive communicative practice. The messages commonly reflect oppositional attitudes towards current political, governmental and social status and reclaim for rights and political or social changes. This paper investigates graffiti as a form of a visual language in Arab cities namely in Baghdad that witnessed thriving of diverse cultural practices such as music, caricatures, graffiti, and street art since the beginning of 25th.October’s 2019 revolutions. In this paper, graffiti and street art murals are examined with semiotic and visual communication framework due to their visual messages’ signs-based nature. The paper detects the significance, meanings and mythological cultural orientation of dominant themes in seven murals. It also identifies graffiti visual elements such as colour, symbols, signs, text, visual imagery and the way they connote diverse meanings. The analysis revealed that the murals connoted senses of different themes related to the Iraqi revolutions such as anti- foreign power intrusion in Iraq, martyrdom, the revolutionist harmony and one nation belonging sense, citizens’ rights, social political change and equality demands. It also reveals that the contemporary visual culture and visual language play a crucial role in redefining the Arab public scenery under the influence of the recent waves of political uprisings locally and globally via documenting the peoples’ anger, refusal of their present and inspire hope of peaceful future.
