الرياضياتُ هو أساسُ العلوم كُلِّها، فَلا يُمكِنُ لأيِّ عِلمٍ أن يقومَ بذاتِهِ مِنْ دُونِ وُجودِ الرياضياتِ، فهو لغةُ التواصُلِ في العالَم التي يُمكِنُ لأيِّ مُختَصٍّ أن يفهَمَها، ولكن لَمْ يتمكَنْ العلماءُ - وخاصة الفلاسفةُ الرياضياتيون - مِن وَضع تعريفٍ خاصٍّ به، فَلَقَدْ وُجِدَتْ مُنذُ القِدَم العديدُ من التعاريف المختلفة المتعلقة بهذا العِلم، فقد عَرَّفَهُ العالِم (أرسطو) بأنّه عِلْمُ الكَمْ، وكما نعلم بأنَّ الكمَّ هو جُزءٌ من الرياضيات
