- Abstract: Background and Objective: Artificial lighting is as an important management tool to regulate production and welfare. The study was conducted in the poultry farm of Agriculture College - University of Tikrit. This study was designated to investigate the effect of different light sources on some productive and physiological characteristics of Japanese quail. Methodology: A total of 180 day old quails used in this study. Quails were divided in three treatments LED, Compact Fluorescent (CFL) and incandescent (INCAN) by 60 birds per treatment, and each treatment is divided into six replications of 10 birds. The duration of this study was 7 weeks. Results: The study found no significant differences in body weight, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio and carcass yield, for all groups during the total period of the experiment. There was a significant increase in the weight of relativity spleen for CFL and INCAN compared to the LED at the age of 7 weeks. As for the female reproductive system, the CFL treatment showed a significant increase in ovarian weight compared to the INCAN treatment, while the LED treatment did not differ significantly from the other treatments. At the age of 7 weeks, the CFL showed significant increase in the number of mature ovarian follicles compared with the INCAN treatment, while the LED treatment did not differ significantly from the other treatments. Conclusion: It is possible to use the LED lighting system to minimize energy expenses in quail housing.
