سعت الدراسة لقياس تأثير العوامل النفسية والاجتماعية في استعداد الشباب الجامعي لإبداء آرائهم السياسية في ثلاث قضايا خلافية بشأن الأزمة في اليمن، وهي: هجمات "عاصفة الحزم" على اليمن بقيادة المملكة العربية السعودية، والعمليات المسلحة لجماعة الحوثي لمطاردة من تصفهم بالعناصر "التكفيرية والدواعش" في اليمن، وشرعية الرئيس عبد ربه منصور هادي، وذلك بالاعتماد على نظرية دوامة الصمت إطارا نظريا للدراسة.
وأظهرت نتائج الدراسة استعداد المبحوثين لإبداء آرائهم السياسية نحو القضايا المدروسة رغم إدراكهم حدة الجدل والخلاف بشأنها، وتوقعهم ردة فعل عدائية من الجانب الآخر، وارتفاع مخاوفهم من التهديد والعزلة الاجتماعية.
وبينت أن المبحوثين الأعلى تقديرا للذات كانوا الأكثر احتمالاً لإبداء آرائهم السياسية علانية بشأن القضايا المدروسة من غيرهم، ولم تثبت النتائج وجود اختلافات دالة إحصائيا بين المبحوثين من حيث الاستعداد للتعبير العلني بحسب الانتماءات السياسية أو الجغرافية أو استقلالية الشخصية.

The study examines the impact of psychological and social factors on youth’s willingness to speak out about political issues in Yemen, according on spiral of silence theory as theoretical framework. In August- September 2015, (164) university students were surveyed. Three topics that were identified as highly controversial in the preliminary study were used in the final survey: Saudi "Decisive Storm "attacks on Yemen, the armed operations of the Houthi group to pursuit of what it calls the "expiatories and terrorists" in Yemen, and the legitimacy of President Abdu Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.
The results showed several interesting findings. First, in all three topics, the spiral of silence did not occur. It found that respondents emphasized their desire to express their political views, despite their awareness of controversy, disagreement, hostile reaction from the other side, and their fears of the threat of social isolation. Second, the results showed that respondents who felt a high level of fear they were more willing to express their opinion in public than others. Also, showed that the highest self-estimate person is more likely to speak out than those who emphasis lower levels of self-estimate. Third, the result did not prove the existence of significant differences between respondents in terms of willingness to express public according to party line, regional position and personal independence.
