لم يكن القارئ أهميّة تذكر في نظريات الأدب الكلاسيكية، لكن نظرياتالتلقي أعادت له حقه وأهميته باعتباره منتجالنص ومؤوّله، وهكذا انتقلت سلطة الأدب من المبدع و النص إلىالقارئ ، فأصبحهذا الطرف حاضرا في العملية الإبداعية، وغداوجود النص مرهونا بقارئ يمنحه الحياة.
ولقد تأكدت سلطة القارئ مع النقاد الألمان في جامعة (كونستانس) الذين جعلوا للقراءة علم جمال خاص دعوه (جماليات التلقي)،ولكنّه لم يكن حكرا على هذا الاتجاه بل كان إجراءنقديا مهما في أغلب المناهج النقدية، ومن الذين اهتموا بالقارئالناقد الأسلوبي ميكائيل ريفاتير ضمن ما اصطلح عليه بالقارئ النموذجي ، وأمبرتو إيكو من خلال القارئ النموذج في إطار سيميولوجية القراءة، كما استوقفتنا آراء جاك دريدا التفكيكية من خلال القارئ المفكِك، أما نظريات القراءة والتلقي فاقترحت القارئ التاريخي لدى هانز روبرت ياوس، والقارئ الضمني لدى فولفغانغ أيزر.

The reader was not of great importance in the theories of classical literature, but the theories of reclaiming his right and importance as a producer of text and its responsibility, and so moved the authority of literature from the creator and the text to the reader, so that the party is present in the creative process, and the presence of the text dependent on the reader gives him life.
