يعد النقل الجوي من أهم وسائط النقل، لتمتع وسيلته بسرعة فائقة تمكنها من الوصول إلى أبعد المسافات في زمنٍ قصير، تعجز عن تحقيقه مركبات النقل الأخرى ، وتأتي هذه الأهمية من الخدمات التي يقدمها هذا المجال من حيث نقل الركاب والبضائع والأمتعة والبريد من دولةٍ إلى أخرى، والتي أدت إلى تسهيل عملية النقل وزيادة الروابط والعلاقات الدولية والذي ساعد بدوره على نشر الحضارة وكل ماهو جديد من المبتكرات العلمية، ويستأثر النقل الجوي في العراق بنحو 75%من جملة حركة نقل الركاب القادمين و المغادرين من و إلى العراق، ، ويعمل على تقليل المسافات بين الدول . ولا تزال هذه الوسيلة غير مستغلة بشكل فاعل في حركة انسياب السلع ، ويتركز نشاطها على نقل الركاب في العراق، عامةً والبصرة بشكلٍ خاصً، ويهدف البحث إلى توضيح مدى التطور الذي طرأ على النقل الجوي في العراق، ومحافظة البصرة بشكلٍ خاص، وخلصت الدراسة إلى إنه يجب أن يكون هناك توازن في التوزيع الجغرافي لحركة النقل الجوي، فقد تركزت بشكلٍ واضح في مطار بغداد الدولي من إجمالي حركة الركاب وذلك بسبب تقييد الحركة في مطار البصرة من قبل شركة الخطوط الجوية العراقية، ووضع رحلتين في الأسبوع فقط. فضلاً عن الارتقاء بنوعية الخدمات المقدمة في المطارات، ومواكبة التطور العالمي في تطبيق المواصفات والمتطلبات الحديثة في مجال الطيران المدني وتلبية الطلب المتنامي في مناطق الجذب الأخرى .
