Under the Mediterranean climate water losses through evapotranspiration during the growth period are an essential criterion to design the best adapted extensive wastewater treatment system to supply safe water volumes for agriculture purposes. Established in 1996, the MHEA® Experimental Centre investigates the comparison and the optimisation of extensive wastewater treatment technologies in order to size and design new ones compatible with wastewater re-use and/or coastal water protection. The scientific follow-up of the first two-year testing procedure (1998/2000) demonstrates that the implementation of multi-Ieve1 systems (aquatic and semi-aquatic or terrestrial ecosystems) achieves the highest treatment performances. The main aim of this paper is 10present and discuss the water budget of 9 artificial ecosystems (aquatic, semi-aquatic, terrestrial, with or without vegetation) supplied by wastewater from January 1999 to September 2000. Although an Arundo donax based wastewater treatment system (average daily evapotranspiration of 38 mm) provides a comprehensive solution to protect the seaside from organic matters, nutrients and microbiological contamination, it is not compatible with water re-use. On the other hand, a Tamarix based system and an unplanted based ecosystem (water losses of 11 and 9 mm/day respectively) provide higher volumes of treated wastewater still in keeping with agriculture requirements (high disinfection rates but low N and P removal rates).
