الملخص العربي
In order to provide fully operational natural wastewater technologies adapted to the socio-economic and c1imatic constraints of the Mediterranean coast, a medium-scale MHEA® Experimental Centre was built in M'Diq (Morocco) in 1996, under the joint responsibility of the Fondation Universitaire Luxembourgeoise, the Faculté des Sciences de l'Université de Tétouan and the local Authority responsible for wastewater management programmes. Since January 1999 an initial testing procedure bas been operating in order to compare the purification efficiencies of 6 extensive systems supplied by urban wastewater. Each system is made up of 3 different levels with a total net treatment area of 2.3 m2/PE (1 PE = 70 l/day). Level I is always an open water ecosystem. Levels II and III consist of open water ecosystems, serni-aquatic ecosystems (planted with Typha or Phragmites) and terrestrial ecosystems (unplanted, planted with Salix or Arundo). Suspended solids, the COD and BODs removal efficiencies of the 6 systems will be discussed. Significant differences appear in primary and secondary removal efficiencies among these 6 systems. The terrestrial ecosystems offer the best performances for SS, COD and BODs removal in both levels II and III although a level II clogging is a major problem. These first results of the optimisation of primary and secondary removal efficiencies enable us to consider the development of efficient and stable MHEA® systems adapted to the Mediterranean area. Keywords: Constructed wetlands; Mediterranean climate; MHEA process; organic removal; suspended solids removal, wastewater treatment.
