الملخص: تناولت الدراسة مدينة خانيونس ورحلة تطورها الحضري، وقسمت إلى محورين رئيسين هما: المحور الأول وجاء بعنوان: تأسيس مدينة خانيونس، وبين أن مدينة خانيونس قد تكون مدينة كنعانية قديمة كانت تعرف باسم "جينسس- jenysus"، أو"ينسس" إلا أن الفتح الإسلامي لفلسطين سنة 636م، لم يؤكد هذا الأمر ، ولكن من المؤكد أن خان يونس الحالية هي مدينة حديثة بنيت عام 1387م، على يد "الأمير يونس أحد أمراء السلطان برقوق، وخلال قرن من الزمان قفز عدد السكان من 3890نسمة سنة1922، إلى 230000 نسمة سنة 2017، يعيشون في تسعة عشر حيًا سكنيًا. موزعة على أراضي مدينة خانيونس البالغ مساحتها نحو 54000 دونمًا. و أما المحور الثاني: فتحدث عن التمدد العمراني في خانيونس: وتم استعراض سبعة عوامل أدت إلى نشأة العمران والتطور الحضري لخانيونس، منذ عام 1799م وحتى عام 2017م، وهي: اهتمام الدول العثمانية وإن كان متأخرًا، ثم نشأة بلدية خانيونس عام1918، و محطة السكة الحديد التي ساعدت على ازدياد أهمية قرية خانيونس في بداية فترة الحكم العسكري البريطاني، والتزايد السكاني ووضع أول مخطط تنظيمي للمدينة عام 1946، و اهتمام الإدارة المصرية بمدينة خانيونس 1948-1967، فخلال فترة الإدارة المصرية تمكنت خانيونس من الانتقال سريعًا من الطبيعة الريفية لها إلى الطابع الحضري، فأصبحت مركزًا حيويًا يقوم على تقديم خدماتها لسكان جنوب قطاع غزة، و تحدى وصمود الأهالي للاحتلال الإسرائيلي 1967-2005، والاهتمام الكبير من قبل السلطة الفلسطينية بتطوير خانيونس 1994-2017 وفي عهد السلطة الفلسطينية ومنذ عام 1995، عملت السلطة على تطوير البنية التحتية للمدينة الأمر الذي ساعد على تطوير الأحياء السكنية.

Abstract:
The study addressed Khan Younis City and its urban development. It is divided into two main parts: The first part titled: Establishment of Khan Younis City. It shows that Khan Younis City is an ancient Canaanite city which was thought that it was known as jenysus, but the Islamic conquest of Palestine in 636 did not confirm that. However, it is certain that the existing city is a modern city built in 1387 by Prince Younis, one of the princes of Sultan Barquq. Within a century, the population raised from 3890 in 1922 to 230,000 in 2017 living in 19 residential neighborhoods spread over its areas of land, an area of approximately 54,000 dunums. The second part talks about the urban expansion in Khan Younis: seven factors that led to the emergence of urbanization and urban development of Khan Younis, from 1799 to 2017, were reviewed which are the interest of the Ottoman countries, albeit late, then the emergence of the Municipality of Khan Younis in 1918, the railway station which contributed in increasing the importance of Khan Younis Village at the beginning of the British military rule era, population growth, setting the first organizational chart of the city in 1946, and the interest of the Egyptian administration in the city of Khan Younis 1948-1967. During the Egyptian administration era, Khan Younis city was able to move quickly from the rural nature to the Urban nature and it became a vital area that provided services to the residents of the southern Gaza Strip.
Residents' steadfastness and challenge against the Israeli occupation 1967-2005, the great interest of the Palestinian Authority in the development of Khan Younis 1994-2017, and through Palestinian authority era since 1995, the authority worked hard to develop the infrastructure of the city, which helped develop residential neighborhoods.
