الانسان انعكاس لبيئته، فهي هويته، ينتمي اليها بكل تفصيلاتها، تسبغ عليه صفاتها، وتمثل مكونا رئيسا في تشكيله الجسماني والنفسي، وعند محاولة معرفة التكوين الشخصي للإنسان نجد ثمة حاجة ملحة للتعرف الى بيئته لتنتظم لدينا المفاهيم المؤسسة للانطباع الأول. يشكل الماء المكون الرئيس لجميع المخلوقات، بدليل قوله تعالى" وجعلنا من الماء كل شيء حي" الأنبياء: 30. ومن هذا المنطلق يمثل الماء الباعث الحقيقي للحياة، وجوهر الوجود، وقد نظر الانسان العربي قديما نظرة تقديس للماء بوصفه ثيمة الخصب والنماء، ومصدر الخير. وانطلاقا من اندماج الانسان ببيئته من جانب وأهمية الماء في الحياة الإنسانية من جانب اخر؛ فقد استحضره الشعراء في قصائدهم في اغلب الأغراض الشعرية، بثوا من خلاله رؤاهم، وعبروا عما يعتمل في صدورهم، فقد تمثل منبعا لإلهامهم، عرضوا له ولحالاته، وعمل خيالهم في توظيفه اعتمالا أثرى نتاجهم ومنحه خصوصية وتفردا، فالنص إذ يمتاح من دلو الطبيعة، يثري مفرداته، ويعمق دلالاته، حتى لكأنه يمتزج بالوانها، ويتداخل مع تفصيلاتها، إذا احسن الكاتب وجه الإفادة منها. ان الماء كمكون فريد اختلف توظيفه في الشعر حسب الحالة النفسية، فكل تجربة تخلق فضاء تعبيريا خاصا بها، يختلف بشكل او باخر عن غيره من الفضاءات، سواء في موقف آني او بالتأمل واستدعاء المواقف من الذاكرة وادماجها بالتجربة المعاشة. عمد شاعرنا الحطيئة الى استحضار الماء في اغلب نتاجه الشعري، بوصفه تلك المادة الغريبة، المشوبة بالغموض، التي تحمل صفات متشابهة ومتضادة في الوقت ذاته، والتي اوجدت عالما من الدلالات التي لا تنضب، وشكلت فضاء رمزيا وظفه الشاعر في بث المفاهيم التي يصبو اليها، يحيل من خلالها المتلقي الى عوالم متعددة القصدية، تحمل في الوقت ذاته جمالا واتساقا مسكوبا في نسق لغوي يليق بمكانته، حتى العطش فيه له رمزيته. كل تلك المقاصد التي يحملها الماء وظفها الحطيئة في غرضين تسيدا شعره، هما (المدح، والهجاء).
