The widespread use of web services motivates phishers to emerge more and more deceptive emails and websites as their never-ending threats to cyber security. These continuously intricate challenges enforce researchers to develop more proficient detection approaches alongside the prevalent ones, such as hybrid phishing detection approaches that incorporate hybrid features, machine learning classifiers, and feature selection methods. However, these detection approaches remain incompetent in classification performance over the vast and imbalanced data of the web. This is attributed to the limited selection of relevant and non-redundant features from the massive number of hybrid ones, and to the variant outcomes of feature selection in the realistic conditions. In this topic, this paper surveys prominent research and highlights their limitations with a particular emphasis on how they could be improved to escalate detection performance. Insights gained from survey restate additional peculiarities and suggest them to promote certain facets of the current research trend. It is hoped that this paper will help researchers on how to develop detection approaches in the presence of the best quality of feature selection outcome.
