تتعرض محافظة المثنى كغيرها من المحافظات الواقعة ضمن المناطق الجافة وشبه الجافة الى مشكلة التصحر، على اعتبار انها جزءا من منطقة الفرات الاوسط شأنها في ذلك شأن مناطق العراق الاخرى التي تعاني من هذه المشكلة ، وبدأت مواردها الطبيعية تتعرض لضغط الاستخدام الشديد تحت وطأة النمو السكاني المتزايد والتوسع في زراعة الاراضي واستغلالها ، فضلاً عن غياب الوعي البيئي بخطورة هذه مشكلة وغياب الخطط والمشاريع التي تسهم في وقف التصحر ، مما ادى بالنهاية الى بروز مظاهر عديدة للتصحر في منطقة الدراسة ، تمثلت بتملح التربة وارتفاع مستوى المياه الجوفية ، وزحف الكثبان الرملية نحو الاراضي الزراعية والمرافق العامة وتعرض مناطق اخرى للتعرية الريحية ، وجاء البحث بثلاث مباحث كان الاول عبارة عن اطار نظري للبحث ، وبحث الثاني اسباب ظاهرة التصحر في المحافظة والمناطق المتأثرة به ودرجة هذا التأثر ، بينما عالج الثالث أثر التصحر السلبي للتصحر على الانتاج الزراعي وبحث ايضا سبل التقليل من حدة هذه الظاهرة ودور الاتساع في الرقعة الزراعية في ذلك .
