مثّلت المدينة في الرّواية العربيّة ساحة لمختلف التيمات الموضوعاتيّة التي تنوّعت حقولها واختلفت من الاجتماعيّة إلى السياسيّة إلى التاريخيّة، والتي تمفصلت بدورها إلى موضوعات فرعيّة عديدة تناولت قصصها المستويات العميقة للفكر في مسايرته للتّحولات التي تطرأ على تلك الحقول وغيرها.
ومن أهم التّحولات التي وقفت الرّواية العربيّة شاهداً عليها، ظاهرةُ العنف التي اخترقت المجتمعات العربية المعاصرة، وساهمت في توجيه الوعي الجمعي نحو أفكار جديدة لم يعهدها النص الروائي ولا قارئه، ميزتها الأساس الخوف والألم والموت وما يدور في فلك هذه الكلمات من حقول دلاليّة.
ومع هذا التّوجه الجديد في رواية المدينة العربيّة برزت ظاهرة الدّيستوبيا التي تقف على النّقيض من النّصوص اليوتوبية التي تناولت الثّورات العربيّة وصور القرية المثالية وأحلام المستقبل المشرق. لقد حلّ التشاؤم واليأس والخوف محلّ تلك التيمات وصار الحاضر العنيف دليلاً على المستقبل الغامض.

In the Arabic novel, the city represented an arena for various thematic themes, whose fields varied and differed from social to political to historical, which in turn were articulated into many sub-themes, whose stories dealt with the deep levels of thought in keeping with the transformations occurring in these and other fields.
One of the most important transformations that the Arabic novel stood witness to is the phenomenon of violence that penetrated contemporary Arab societies, and contributed to directing collective consciousness towards new ideas that neither the narrative text nor its reader had ever known, the main feature of which was fear, pain and death, and the semantic fields of these words.
With this new trend in the novel of the Arab city, the phenomenon of dystopia emerged, which stands in contrast to the utopian texts that dealt with the Arab revolutions, images of an ideal village and dreams of a bright future. Pessimism, despair and fear have replaced those themes, and a violent present has become a sign of an uncertain future.
