كانت زخرفة المتاهة واحدة من أهم الأنماط الفنية التي عُرفت في مصر وأفريقيا خلال عصور ما قبل التاريخ، ولقد ظهرت تلك الزخرفة بأشكال متنوعة وبأنماط عده كان أشهرها ذلك النمط الحلزوني الذي كان أقرب لخط منحنى ينطلق من نقطة المركز، وكلما دار حول النقطة يبتعد عنها تدريجياً، وربما أشارت زخرفة المتاهة الى نوع من الفنون ذات المغزى النفسي الفلسفي، ولقد كثر تواجدها وانتشارها في مواضيع الرسوم والنقوش الصخرية في أماكن عدة خلال عصور ما قبل التاريخ. ولقد وضحت المتاهة ليس فقط في الرسوم والنقوش الصخرية، وإنما أيضاً في المنشآت المعمارية خلال عصور ما قبل التاريخ، إذ عُثر على العديد من التكوينات الصخرية المشيدة من أعمدة حجرية أو كتل صخرية "الميجاليث" متراصة بشكل دائري ومتخذة في تصميمها شكل أقرب للدوائر المتداخلة أو الحلزون، وذلك في بقاع عده من العالم ليست فقط في مصر وأفريقيا، مما أكد على أهمية ذلك النمط الفني في فكر وعقيدة إنسان عصور ما قبل التاريخ، فكانت ضرورة تناول فكرة المتاهة ودلالتها آنذاك بنوع من التفصيل. ولقد ظهرت زخرفة المتاهة أيضاً ضمن مواضيع الرسوم الفخارية وعلى العديد من التشكيلات الصخرية في مصر وأفريقيا، وظهرت كذلك على بعض التماثيل الآدمية والحيوانية التي نحتها انسان عصور ما قبل التاريخ وكان لكلا دلالته وتفسيره. سيتناول البحث بالدراسة هذا النمط الفني في مصر وبعض مواقع القارة الأفريقية، وسيتتبع ظهور وتطور هذا النمط الزخرفي من خلال استعراض نماذج له، وقوفاً على محاولة تفسيره، وتوضيح أسباب انتشاره، ومعرفة الغرض الفني والنفسي والعقائدي له.

The Prehistoric man expressed about himself through the art, the art was the mirror which reflects his imagination and cleared the reality of his life, it was an important way to translate his thoughts and beliefs in Egypt and Africa. The decoration of the "spiral" was one of the most important decorative patterns known in Egypt and most Africa since prehistoric times, The term "maze" refers to the general shape of this decoration, Where the continuous spiral lines wrapped around each other and make the shape of Snail decoration, It is worth mentioning that; the spiral shape was not the only motive which expressed the idea of maze, there were also Numerous geometric and Zigzag lines among the rock inscriptions and vessels decoration were found in many places during pre-historic and early dynastic period; it expressed also the idea of the maze With the unclear of its beginning and its end. The drawings and inscriptions of the maze have appeared in Egypt and Africa since the Prehistory period in various forms and patterns, both within the subjects of the drawings and the rock inscriptions or within the decoration of pottery vessels dating back to the era before and the early dynasty. Perhaps the spiral decoration or interlocking decoration which pointed to the meaning of the maze was a symbol of eternity; permanence and continuity, thus, the decoration of the maze, in this case, has a religious and temporal significance expressed by a prehistoric man through a philosophical-psychological view.
