الملخص العربي
Heavy metals are well recognized as potential health hazards. Chromium, copper, cadmium, lead, … etc can neither be degraded nor biologically detoxified and have tendency to accumulate in living organisms. Chromium compounds present at high concentrations in wastewater discharged from industrial sites such as tanneries can be lethal to organisms. This study concerned to evaluate the chromium removal potential by Cement Kiln Dust (CKD), due to the fact that it is a very abundant as a byproduct from a cement manufacturing process and inexpensive material in The Great Jamahiriya. Fixed bed column is used in this study. The column having a diameter 2.54 cm, the different bed heights 15, 20, and 25 cm used for Cr(III) removal from both samples and flow rate 10.5 ml/min. Different column design parameters like depth of exchange zone, time required for exchange zone to move its own height, adsorption rate constant and adsorption capacity were calculated. Obtained results for bed column studied fixed were very well whereas time required for bed to become exhausted after the breakthrough occurred was very short, that indicate to the high capacity of CKD to sorption of Cr(III) from wastewater effluents.
