إن مصطلح إدارة المعرفة من المصطلحات الحديثة التي شاع استخدامها حالياً في مختلف بقاع العالم والتي تهدف إلى تبادل المعارف سواء كانت هذه المعارف ضمنية أو صريحة.
ونتيجة للثورة الهائلة في تقنية المعلومات حتى أصبح من الصعب على الفرد أن يلم بكل ماأنتجته القريحة الإنسانية في مجال تخصصه. ومن اجل مواجهة هذه الثورة العارمة من المعلومات وتحسين الأداء فان تطبيق إدارة المعرفة يعد إحدى الوسائل التي يمكن للمنظمات اللجؤ إليها باعتبار أن إدارة المعرفة تعد في عالمنا المعاصر من أهم الأفكار الحديثة التي تساهم مساهمة فعالة في نجاح الأعمال والمؤسسات.
ولقد ظهرت عدة مفاهيم جديدة فرضت علينا نتيجة ظهور التقنيات الحديثة مثل مفهوم البيانات والمعلومات والمعرفة ، وقد ربط الباحثون بين المعرفة والإدارة وإدارة المعرفة وعلم المكتبات نتيجة الكم الهائل من المعلومات فأصبح من الضروري وضع إستراتيجية لكيفية إدارة المعلومات ومن ثم ظهر مايسمى بإدارة المعرفة.
كما تعتبر إدارة المعرفة فرصة كبيرة للمكتبات في رفع جودة الخدمات التي تتيحها للمستفيدين . ونظراً لاعتماد إدارة المعرفة على تطورات العصر في تقنية المعلومات والاتصالات فان المكتبات ومراكز المعلومات ستواجه تغييرات جسيمة فيما يتعلق بمواصفات العاملين فيها ومؤهلاتهم ومدى اكتسابهم لمهارات وكفاءات تتعلق بإدارة المعرفة والطرق الحديثة لتنظيم الوصول إليها عبر الشبكات.
وان مشكلة العصر تكمن في الانفجار الهائل في كمية المعلومات والمعارف والعلوم بحيث يكاد يكون من الصعب إدارتها وتصنيفها ولهذا ظهر مصطلح إدارة المعرفة للتغلب على هذه المشكلات.
وان التقنية فرضت على اخصائى المعلومات مواجهة تحديات المتغير الجديد حيث أن إدارة المعرفة فرضت على اخصائى المعلومات أن تكون لهم القدرة على التعلم الذاتي .
