ضرب الشعراءُ المثلَ بالحمامةِ في الشوقِ والحنين؛ فكم هاج شدوُها وبكاؤها أحزانَ المحبّين ولواعج أشجانِهم. وقد كثُرَ ذِكرُها في أشعار عُشَّاقِ العرب من لَدُن الجاهليين. وقد كان لأبي العلاء المعري رحمه الله ولعٌ بوصف الحمائم وشدوها وغنائها إلا أنه كان أكثر ولعًا بوصفِ أطواق الحمائم؛ فقلَّما يفوتُه ذكرُ الطوق في معرِضِ ذِكرِه لسجع ِالحمامةِ أو شدوها وبكائها ، وقد استدعى في وصفه لأطواق الحمائم ذكرَ النساء وحَسنهنَّ وحَليهنَّ فجعل وصفَه للحمامة ذريعةً لذكر النساء. ولا غروَ فلأبي العلاء أبياتٌ في الغزل سائرةٌ مشهورة خاصةً في ديوانه سِقط الزند " الذي يشتملُ على شعر الشباب فجعل من شعرَه في وصف الحمامة وسيلةٌ للغزل في المرأة؛ فما كان ظاهرُ بغضه للمرأة إلا تمويهاً إذ أحبَّها سرَّاً وكرهها جهراً. وما ذكر الحمامة إلا وأتبعها بذكر المرأة. ولكنَّه لجأ إلى التعمية والإلغاز صونًا لما اشتهر به من إعراضِه عن الدنيا وملذّاَتها. ورغم ما ابتُليَ به من كفِّ البصرِ فقدوصف الحمائم وأطواقَها وصفاً بذَّ فيه المُبصريِن من الشعراء.

It is not surprising that Abi Al-Ala’s verses in flirting are well-known, especially in his collection of poems, “The Zend Falls,” which includes the poetry of youth, so he made his poetry describing the dove a means of flirting with women. His hatred for women was only apparent as a camouflage, as he loved her secretly and hated her openly.
