The propagation of small amplitude waves in a pre-stressed symmetric 4-ply laminate with
fixed faces is addressed in this paper. The dispersion relation associated with symmetric
and antisymmetric solutions in the 4-ply laminate with fixed faces are first derived and then
investigated both numerically and analytically in the high and low wave number regime.
The so-called fixed faces, or no-slip boundary conditions ensures that no motion is possible
on the upper and lower surface of the laminate and may be thought to model situations
when the laminate clamped by stiffer materials. After presentation of these numerical
solutions, particular focus is applied to the short wave regime, within which appropriate
asymptotic approximations are established. These are shown to provide excellent agreement
with the numerical solution over a surprisingly larger than might be expected wave number
regime
