إن تغيير دور أخصائي المكتبات تابع من تغيير هيكلة المكتبات حيث أن الهيكلية القديمة بالنسبة للمكتبات كانت تقاس بوفرة رصيدها من أوعية المعلومات المختلفة والإجابة على أسئلة المستفيدين وبعد ظهور تقنية المعلومات والتي بدورها غزت كل المؤسسات فقد تغير دور أخصائي المكتبة حتى أصبح يطلق عليه عدة تسميات من بينها: وسيط للمعلومات- المكتبي الرقمي- أمين مكتبة المستقبل- أخصائي الشبكات.
