يعد الحديث عن موضوع الهوية حديثا ملتبسا إلى حد ما، ومفهوما مفتوحا، بالنظر إلى ما تحمله دلالة هذا المصطلح من تشعب فى الطرح، وتنوع فى الانتماء، سواء من الناحية الدينية، أو القومية، أو العرقية، أو الاثنية، أو حتى فى بعض الخصوصيات اللغوية والمعرفية، أو فى أنماط الحياة، إلى غير ذلك من الظواهر التي تربط الإنسان بالانتماء المزدوج فى هويته المركبة، بما فى ذلك عدم الانسجام داخل كل فرد فى خياراته المتعددة ـ أحيانا ـ وفى خصوصية انتماءاته المضطربة، والمثقلة بالهواجس والريبة فى أحايين كثيرة.
