Abstract
This paper describes a numerical study of the performance of spray models in the simulation of the combustion process and emissions in a direct injection diesel engine with a detailed chemistry approach. Computations are carried out using a CFD code KIVA–CHEMKIN. Models of fragmentation of the droplets CAB and ETAB (Enhanced TAB) are employed. Then, the results obtained are compare with those of the original model TAB (Taylor Analogy break up). In these approaches the process of breakup of the droplets has been improved to explain the different régimes of break up that occur in the combustion chamber: for the ETAB model “bag regime" and "stripping regime" and CAB is an extension to “catastrophic regime”. The chemical reactions model implemented is a detailed mechanism which involves 68 species and 280 reactions in the combustion model. The turbulent combustion model Partially Stirred Reactor (PaSR) model is selected to simulate the spray combustion process. Results show that combustion characteristics are affected by breakup models and regimes.
