أن الاسبلة من أشهر أنواع المنشآت الخيرية التي عرفتها العمارة الإسلامية عامة والعثمانية خاصة،وكان الغرض منها توفير المياه العذبة الصالحة للشرب كل يوم وعلى مدار السنة كلها كي ينتفع بها في سقي الناس،ولذلك تم وقف العديد من العقارات ليتم الصرف عليها والاعتناء بها، وكلما كان منشأ السبيل ميسور الحال تمكن من الصرف على إضافة بعض العناصر المعمارية والتشكيلات الزخرفية التي تضفي على المكان بهجة وجمالا وتعطي صورة واضحة عن حال ومكانة منشأ السبيل. لقد كان العامل الديني سببا مباشرا في بناء الاسبلة في ولاية بغداد خلال العهد العثماني لتزويد الناس بالماء مجانا حيث انتشر أسلوب تخصيص ركن لتلك الاسبلة في العمائر الدينية خاصة في المساجد والمدارس والتكايا والمراقد وغيرها أو تبنى بشكل مستقل.
