Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of competitive level on athletes' use of imagery, the first was to examine the functions of imagery by the athletes during the off-season, and the second purpose was to examine whether athletes' use of imagery on related to their physical preparation. A total of 324 team sport athletes' completed a modified version of the Sport Imagery Questionnaire (SIQ; Hall, Mack, Paivio & Hausenbilas, 1998) that was designed to expose in the athletes' use imagery in the off-season. An ANOVA indicated that athletes' used significantly different amount of the imagery functions: (F4,2345)=63.673, p<05. Newman Keuls post hoc tests revealed that athletes reported using motivational general mastery imagery the most. Further, an ANOVA, F (1<322) = 88,876, p<.05 , revealed that athletes reported using significantly more physical preparation than technical preparation. National level athletes engaged in significantly more imagery than regional level athletes. Finally, imagery can play a valuable role in both phase of training, and athletes should be encouraged to employ imagery year around. Keywords: Influence Sport Competitive Athletes' Imagery
