إن مبدأ العدالة ما بين الأجيال الذي تم تكريسه في العديد من المواثيق و الاتفاقيات البيئية يعتبر أحد أهم مقومات التنمية المستدامة. و لكن نجد أن هذا المبدأ يكتنفه الغموض من حيث محتواه، بحيث يثير العديد من الأسئلة خاصة ما هي العناصر البيئية التي يجب استدامتها و حفظها من أجل الأجيال اللاحقة ؟ و هنا نجد انقسام فهناك من يرى أنه يقع علينا إلتزام بحفظ العناصر الأساسية للبيئة فقط و هناك قسم آخر يرى بضرورة بحفظ جميع العناصر البيئية من أجل الأجيال اللاحقة.
