عرف النقد العربي أوج ازدهاره في القرنين الرابع والخامس الهجريين، ولا يعني هذا أن النقد العربي لم يكن موجوداً، بل لقد مارست العرب النقد للمفاضلة بين الشعراء، قبل أن يكون لهذا النقد كيان ووجود، ونورد هنا نصاً يؤكد ما قلناه،
فالنقد بهذا المعنى تعبير عن موقف كلي يبدأ بالتذوق، ومن خلاله تبدأ عملية التفسير والتحليل والتعليل والتقييم، لنصل إلى التأصيل لنقد منهجي واضح الرؤى والمعالم؛ وبناء عليه فإن النقد المنهجي العربي تأخر في البروز بالشكل الذي ظهر به مع الآمدي والصولي والمرزوقي؛ لأنه كان بحاجة ماسة إلى مرحلة التأسيس المبنية على التراكم في التأليف، وأيضاً نضج الحركة الأدبية التي زكتها الفرق الكلامية والخصومات النقدية وغيرها.
