إن العلم وليد البحث، والبحث تنقيب مستمر عن المعرفة بطريقة علمية، وهو من أهم دعامات العلم، ومن أركان بناء الحضارة العلمية، فالبحث هو شعار الحياة المتجددة، التي تصنع الحضارة والرفاهية الإنسانية.
في الماضي لم يكن للبحث العلمي دوراً مؤثراً في الحياة، ولكن مع نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، وازدياد أعداد البشر، أصبح للبحث تأثيراً بالغاً في مواجهة المشاكل وحلها، لتحقيق النجاح في شتى ميادين الحياة وإسعاد البشر، فأولت الدول المتقدمة رعاية فائقة للبحث العلمي، باعتباره الركيزة الأساسية للتقدم، وأجزلت العطاء في سبيل تطويره .
